Hacienda de los Santos Resort
Welcome to the Hacienda Blogger. It changes often, so please keep checking back for added events. Whether you spend a few hours or several days at the Hacienda, the experience will be memorable—an escape from ringing cell phones and multi-tasking.
It is not necessary to be at the Hacienda during an event as Alamos and the Hacienda offer just what you need. Getting married or just getting away, Alamos is the place for romance.
Alamos’s timeless qualities and scenic beauty are the perfect setting for romance---whether yours is the love of a lifetime or just beginning to bloom. The historic city has an intimate scale with adobe walls and secluded gardens, while endless skies and scarlet sunsets offer a glimpse of eternity.
Perhaps it’s the slower pace of life that inspire couples to appreciate the moment---and one another. You are sure to leave with the memories of a lifetime.
Intensive Guitar Lessons
Academia de Musica

Maestro Ramon Alcantar
Passionate about the guitar, Ramon Alcantar began teaching himself at the age of five. At the age of fifteen he became a member of La Estudiantina, a group of young men who play the guitar and dress in the traditional 18th century Spanish costumes. He was a dedicated member for eleven years and the last four years was the Director. Ramon speaks both English and Spanish.
He spent four years studying music at the University in Hermosillo, where he composed lyrics for many of his own songs. He returned to Alamos to spend the next nine years as the first high school music teacher in the history of the village. Many of his students excelled and won high level music contests in Mexico. His quartet. Los Hacendados, have made three irresistible CD’s. They play nightly at Hacienda de Los Santos.
Ramon has opened a music school in Alamos, very close to the Hacienda, and is looking forward to teaching adults of all ages and levels.
The Academia is offering classical and popular guitar lessons. For Hacienda de los Santos guests, Ramon is offering intensive 3 hours per day classes for 5 days. His Academia program is for the beginner to the advanced guitar student. He seeks dedicated students who want to learn and raise their skills.
Cost per 15 hour intensive session is $260.00 (USD). Class times are based upon availability, Sundays excluded.
Club Pilotos Summer Reunion (4 days), August 14, 15, 16,
departing on Sunday the 17th of 2008

This can include downloads, the unusual, etc. This package includes all meals for two, a Hacienda Room for three nights, morning hikes, use of gym, pools, theater, ground transportation a "Tequila 101" class with samples and live music nightly. Options include a new outback route to a seldom visited 1605 Spanish Mission on the Rio Mayo in our Swiss Army 6X6 and no charge instructions and coordinates for overflight of the Copper Canyon.

Chef Jale Tweedy, a well known Tucson caterer, takes a yearly break to
Hacienda de los Santos to share her skills with the guests.
Classes begin on November 12th, 13th, 14th, 2008

Jale was born in the tiny fishing village of Mersin on the coast of the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey. It is a land of steep forested mountains and lush valleys and hills where villagers cultivate crops such as corn, tea, tobacco, and hazelnuts. Settled four thousand years ago and heavily influenced by centuries of trade between Asia and Europe, the culture demands that guests be honored to the highest degree. This rigorous ethic of hospitality finds its utmost expression in food.
Surrounded by great women cooks including her grandmother, many aunts, and mother, Jale learned to respect food. Be gentle. The role of a cook is to guide the food to one’s plate with as little handling as possible, thus protecting the natural flavors. Too often in modern commercial kitchens, food is over-prepared. In the rush to produce many portions at once, the concept of being gentle with food is alien. Yet with her catering company Jale has demonstrated that the culinary values of her culture are easily translated to a fast paced setting in which hundreds of people can be served without sacrificing excellence.
Despite her passion for food and all things which grow, Jale never dreamed of being a professional chef. She became a pharmacist in 1992, and in 2002 earned a degree in Dietetics from the University of Arizona. Yet she began to recognize that cooking for the enjoyment of others was her purpose in life. Finally she surrendered to her calling and in 2004 founded her company, Petite Pea Catering & Fine Foods. Her mission continues today, to gently prepare the very best ingredients and serve dishes that make people happy.

Photography Workshop for the “Point and Shoot” Digital Camera User
…How to go from snapshots…to fabulous photographs in three fun-filled days.
This workshop is designed for those wanting more…way more… from their photographs. Whether you’re new to photography or just wanting to learn more about what you and your digital camera can do, join us for this fun and relaxed three-day workshop which focuses on using digital “point and shoot” or compact cameras.
Each day will begin with a three-hour classroom session focusing on techniques, general camera operations, composition, tips, tricks and a review of images, some taken by workshop particpants. The workshop will also touch on all the creative things you can do with your photographic images including photo books and high quality prints. Each afternoon, participants will have a choice of fun, creative self-assignments, which will allow them to practice their new skills and gain confidence in their photography. For those curious about more advanced techniques, there will be an opportunity for a unique “behind the scenes” look at a live commercial photo shoot on the grounds of the Hacienda during the workshop.
During the workshop, you’ll become more comfortable with your camera, learn how to use some of the manual controls (and how to get off “automatic mode”), understand depth of field and lighting. Even more importantly, you’ll learn to think and “see” like a photographer and develop the skills to make those “Wow!” photographs.
By the end of the three days with Craig, you will leave invigorated and enthusiastic about photography and have a new confidence and ability to see the creative possibilities in every image you make.
Your instructor…
Craig Shanklin brings experience, passion and inspiration to the art of photography. A noted commercial photographer based in Utah, it has always been his belief that “It’s not the camera…but how you use it” that is important. Craig Shanklin Images, a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), specializes in informal portraiture and commercial photography (primarily used in advertising and magazine publications). However, his real passion is for architectural photography. Craig is currently photographing and writing a book on Spanish Colonial Architecture and Design due to be published in 2009.
What you should bring:…
- A digital compact or “point and shoot” camera with extra battery and memory card.
- Your camera manual
- A small tripod will be helpful but is optional
- A laptop computer will be helpful but is optional; the instructor will provide computer access for those that need to download images.
Cost: $80.00 usd to be paid at time of reservation

Hacienda Christmas 2008

We don’t dream of a White Christmas at the Hacienda, we dream of a Spiritual, Relaxing, Warm Days, Cool Nights and Fun Filled Celebration. We dream of options…..sleeping late, reading a book by one of the four pools, being waited upon at your beckon call, dancing or listening to live salsa or romantic music, enjoying fine food, walking hand in hand over the cobble stoned streets in the village, no pressure, being embraced by another culture, meeting other Hacienda guests, having a great massage, sitting in front of a fireplace, great conversations, riding a horse, going with Jim into the outback in 6X6 Pinzgauer (google this one), but most of all taking time
to love and be loved at your own pace.
“Hacienda de los Santos” Christmas
Just imagine a candle lit procession, with soft guitar music, as Joseph leads a very pregnant and tired Mary through a barrio close to the Hacienda. The evening is crisp and they are refused entry at each stop. We follow along and feel their pain and disappointment. Then the huge 18th century two ton Hacienda doors open and they are lead to an authentic manager created by the Hacienda family. Many tears are shed on this journey as we finally “get it.” The baby is born and the Celebration begins. Alamos is not about gifts…it’s about feeling. And the feelings are shared by all, guests, locals and staff. It is in the air everywhere and you will know why you spent this Christmas at the Hacienda. Let this “experience” be your gift.

Second Annual Alamos Silver Festival
Featuring Emilia Castillo
of Taxco, Mexico

“I follow my hands. They are the best companions in my work. They allow me to express things I can’t put into words.”

Emilia Castillo - Keynote Festival Silversmith & Speaker

My name is Lacey Waddell. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I am proud to say that I have had a reputation for making and wearing big jewelry as long as I can remember. As a sixth grader I wore huge earrings which were always the topic of discussion with classmates. As I entered junior high school I began to create jewelry out of sculpted watercolor paper and sold them successfully to teachers and staff. In high school I began to create beaded pieces, also bringing in some much needed extra income. I entered San Diego State University in 1994 as an Applied Design Major with emphasis in Jewelry Design and Fabrication. I studied under internationally known art-jeweler Arline Fisch. One of my proudest moments was having a piece of my work published in her instructional book Textile Techniques in Metal. In August of 2003, a dream came true when I opened my own jewelry shop in the historic area of Old Town San Diego. With a vast knowledge of quality, design, and origins of handcrafted imported silver from around the world, I have developed a long list of regular customers who, over the years, have also become my friends.
Lacey says that she will be bringing the best of the best to this Festival.

Judith Baigent-King CCP

Growing up in Nelson, New Zealand, Judith Baigent-King CCP attributes her love of cooking to the fun and fragrant memories of times spent in her grandmother’s welcoming kitchen. Sharing food was family time spent together, whether growing and harvesting it from the back yard garden or preserving harvested fruits and berries for the winter.
After time spent training in Europe, Judith moved to Los Angeles before happily moving to Tucson where, in 1993, she started Culinary Concepts Cooking School. This popular school taught hands on classes to over 500 students a month before Judith retired in May of 2008. She authored the cookbook, Culinary Concepts, 100 Recipes and Tips for the Home Chef, published by Gibbs Smith in 2007. For the past four years she has taught regularly at The Hacienda De Los Santos, in Alamos, Mexico. Her next scheduled classes at the Hacienda will be March 5th, 6th and 7th 2009.

“Go for it, but know when to STOP”
The Hacienda de los Santos and their gracious staff are known for making your stay a momentous venture. You will dine on the open air veranda and in the intimate high-ceilinged rooms that were once a Sugar Mill. At night the flickering of the luminarias and the scent of mesquite burning in the fireplaces beckon you to gather in the Hacienda cantina for drinks and hor d’ouerves while being serenaded by Los Hacendados, singing the Bolero & Salsa music of Mexico.
The atmosphere of the Hacienda de las Santos has been described as a place where “time has stopped” and you will want to luxuriate in the many different ways to enjoy the moment. Imagine relaxing by one of the four azure-tiled pools sipping a margarita or watching; parrots swarm from tree to tree. You will also want one of the Hacienda spa services that include massages and facials, manicures, pedicures, and reflexology. Or perhaps, you will want to read under the portals beside one the many outdoor fireplaces.

Home and Garden Tour. Please meet in front of the Museum on the Plaza for a guided tour of two Spanish Colonial homes and their lovely gardens. This tour is a fundraiser for needy local student scholarships. Cost per person is $12.00. Students must show need and maintain a B average to retain their scholarship. More than 250 scholarships are given each year. Tour leaders are all volunteer North Americans. See how the ex-pats live South of the Border.
